Just realized that I never had a chance to get advantages of a7S’s high sensitivity and low noise capabilities since I got this camera months back so decided to bring it with me for my 7 day mountaineering on a silver week holiday aiming to shoot some star-trails and night timelapse photography.

In short, I was really surprised by and am happy with the results. I pushed ISO to 12,800 which I never was able to do with the Nikon cameras because of the terrible noise the Nikon produced. The Sony a7S, on the other hands, I don’t say it’s noise free, but the noise I saw on my night shots were not like ugly ones (red and yellow) that I have seen from the Nikon D810.

The weather for the first 3 days of the 7 day trip were really great. Many of my favorite pictures were shot during that period and this particular one, clear air, blue sky and colorful trees, was shot on the Panasonic GH4 on 2nd day.

A difficulty I had this time, actually last time as well, was that I wasn’t quite getting the right exposure while I was doing a holly grail timelapse shooting (day to night / night to day). I always blew out the skies or/and the sun so what I did was to shoot the scene with locked exposure until about the sun to come out, then stop shooting, quickly reset exposure, locked and start shooting again. I know there is the “Tracking” AE setting on the TimeLapse Apps but as I don’t know much about it I’m hoping to have some time to experiment before my next mountaineering.

I was lucky that the weather recovered toward the end after three days of raining and had enough time to go up to the Yarigatake peak twice, and was able to capture special moments from there. Moving clouds were just amazing and sunset scene was simply breathtaking. And, there were moments that no one was there or just a few at the top so it was really quiet and peaceful.

Finally, I ended up with taking about 13,000 still pictures and below is the final YouTube video from my awesome 7 day trip to Northern Japan Alps, Omoteginza.
